AUDIT

Alstom rationalises its flame installations

Diagnosis and remedy! In April SAF conducted a flame audit of the Alstom* site at Valenciennes. "A series of events, followed by two fire outbreaks, set the operation in motion, explains Philippe Carol, RNST** at SAF. It involved preparing an inventory of the facilities and proposing a repair schedule".

From the torch pressure regulators through to pipes, connections, safety equipment, including flame traps, each installation had to be itemised and checked. The findings: the proliferation of connections tended to increase the risk of leaks. A standard set-up was therefore proposed; It included the same pipe lengths, the same number of connections, the same type of flame trap, the same sleeves, etc. for all the units. In addition, Alstom has requested SAF to carry out its annual equipment inspection.

"We have currently refitted nearly one hundred wall units and more than fifty torches. The time factor is important and the presence of SAF technician Hubert Leleu at the SLC*** has enabled us to carry out all the fitting within a week. This audit reflects the standard of service provided to Alstom."
